Three Season Porch
Wonder of the Seasons
Location: Buckhead, Atlanta
The Challenge
Our client wanted a separate family space for the kids to gather with friends as well as for entertaining and enjoying the outdoors. They were concerned that an attached porch would cause darkness in the adjacent rooms in the home. To build a porch away from the house proved a design challenge as the backyard is terraced requiring us to build the porch on one of these terrace levels.
The Solution
To achieve our client’s wishes, we dug into the top terrace level in order to move the fireplace back to facilitate a larger patio space. We worked to leave the existing stone retaining walls, as they are original to the house. We used similar materials, when needed, to integrate new walls seamlessly. The fireplace is a wood-burning one and we made a concerted effort to architecturally style the porch to match their 1950’s home. Other elements such as the bead board ceiling and the painted brick fireplace and seat wall were included to further match the home. Our intention was to design a porch that looked as if it had always been there.
