Thinking about a kitchen remodel? Curious about what’s been trending in 2021? Jeanne’ Bourgeois and Deborah Hosey are two of our very talented Interior Designers that specialize in home remodeling. As we know, trends come and go, and our designers have their finger on the pulse. Here are their top 7 new design ideas to consider if you are planning to remodel your kitchen in the future:
1) Bolder and darker cabinetry: Colors like navy, black and green are making quite a statement in many kitchens around the country. Jeanne’ is finding that clients seem to want to take the risk of bold and dark when remodeling their kitchen, and are veering away from the classic white and gray trend we’ve seen in the past. 2) Natural stone countertops: While quartz and granite have been used frequently, Deborah is seeing more people veer towards natural stone, though it requires more maintenance. However, natural stone is known for its durability and ability to withstand the test of time. It’s also eco-friendly and sanitary, which is always a plus. (photo cred: atthepicketfence.com)
3) Stained cabinets: Deborah and Jeanne’ both are noticing an upward trend in light colored wood stains, as well as mixing different wood tones. Stained wood gives it that beautiful, natural appearance and highlights the character of the wood. They have also been seeing kitchens with mixed wood tones and painted tones, which gives it that beautiful look that blends modern with traditional. (photo cred: Pinterest)
4) Mixed fixtures: As far as kitchen fixtures, mixing brass with black or brushed nickel has been on the rise, as well as things like black faucets with leather brass handles – a very different more modern trend. (photo cred: clarkandaldine.com
5) More paneling: Instead of the typical stainless steel refrigerator, there’s been an increase in paneling the fridge and in other areas, too. For example, many people are creating a coffee station that’s enclosed with paneling in the front to conceal it. Paneling creates a more custom look, with the appearance presenting more like furniture. (photo cred: SGDI)
6) Floating shelves: An up-and-coming trend Deborah said she’s seeing is that people are leaving traditional cabinetry behind and opting for floating shelves. These shelves can be anything from wood to marble to a bistro shelf, which creates that updated kitchen appearance. (photo cred: modernglam.com)
7) Kitchen lighting: Instead of canned lighting and pendants over the island, the trend in kitchen lighting is moving towards multiple hanging fixtures. Deborah sees more and more kitchens with semi-flush lights mixed with pendants. This trend modernizes the space and elevates it to give it that fresh, rejuvenated look. (photo cred: veranda.com)
